Marcia J. Oliver is a longtime Muskoka cottager who was born and raised in Markham, and practiced in London before moving to Huntsville in 2004. Marcia has practiced exclusively in construction law and defence insurance for most of her career. Marcia opened her own practice in Huntsville in 2006. In 2010, she merged her practice with Purser Dooley Cockburn Smith LLP, and continues as a partner with the firm, overseeing the Huntsville Office.
Marcia primarily acts for mid to large sized general contractors and developers involved in the Institutional, Commercial and Industrial sectors of construction. Since relocating to Muskoka Marcia had undertaken some limited residential construction and also acts for owners. With respect to her insurance practice she acts for insurance clients and deals primarily with claims arising out of construction activities. Marcia is involved in all aspects of construction including contract negotiation, resolution of project disputes, claims litigation and construction liens.
In 1990, Marcia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Hons.) from the University of Toronto in Political Science with an emphasis on Public Administration. Marcia obtained her Law Degree from the University of Western Ontario’s Law School in 1998 and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2000. Prior to attending law school, Marcia worked with the Ministry of Transportation in Downsview and London where she gained extensive experience in highway construction issues.
Marcia is the Co-Chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee and a Member of the of the Executive of the Construction Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association; she is also a member of the Muskoka Builders’ Association, Vice President of the Muskoka Law Association, and past President of the Board of Directors for the Community YWCA of Muskoka.
Marcia has been a frequent speaker and lecturer for: the Construction Law course at Fanshawe College in the Construction Project Manager’s Program; the construction law module for the OGCA Gold Seal Program, through the London and District Contractor’s Association; various OBA Construction Law Section Continuing Legal Education Programs, and the Ontario Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Managers Society.
